Sweet sesame toast

Savory and sweet with the distinctive nutty aroma and flavor of sesame seeds. Breathe new life into your morning toast with this easy recipe. So few ingredients and such short prepration time.

Sweet sesame toast

The photos are from 2012. The recipe was inspired by something I saw on a Thai blog where blogger was trying to recreate a common bakery product in Thailand. I can’t find the blog anymore but I have kept the recipe.

What makes sweet sesame toast so special that, ten years later, I still consider the recipe worth sharing? Let me describe it to you for better appreciation.

Mixing salted butter with powdered sugar

The spread is a mixture of salted butter and powdered sugar. There is no right or wrong proportion between the two ingredients — it all depends on how sweet you want your toast.

Why salted butter? If you’ve ever baked a cake, you’d know that although the baked product is meant to be sweet, still, a pinch or two of salt is added to the batter. It’s for contrast. Without the salt, the sweetness will taste flat. It’s the same thing with the butter-sugar mixture that’s spread on the bread slices in this recipe.

Sweet sesame toast before and after baking

The butter-sugar mixture is spread on bread slices and sesame seeds are sprinkled in. No need to toast the sesame seeds. They will get toasted sufficiently in the oven to allow them to release their beautiful aroma and flavor.

Inside the hot oven, the butter melts and gets absorbed by the bread. The powdered sugar stays on top, turns crisp and forms a lightly crisp lace-like pattern on the surface of the bread. So, when you bite into the toast, you get lovely flavors, great texture and fantastic aroma.

Cutting off and discarding the crust on all four sides of the bread is optional. I did it for optics because this is a food blog. If you do decide that you don't the crusts either, don't throw them away. You can make them into croutons or milk and bread pudding.
