This is an update of a recipe originally published prior to 2010 based on the plantation artwork on the label of Southern Comfort. That artwork was dropped after 2010. But, for the life of me, I can no longer locate the folder where my original photos of the drink was stored.
Southern Comfort is a whiskey-based liqueur flavored with spices and fruits. Story has it that a bartender named Martin Wilkes “M.W” Heron was so sick of the inconsistency of the quality of whiskey coming in from Tennessee and Kentucky that he decided to “create a whiskey-based drink with a consistent flavor.” The exact original recipe is still a secret but that recipe has been modified since its creation in 1874.
Meanwhile, Mountain Dew, originally created as a cocktail mixer, has a distinct orange-y flavor.
- ½ to 1 lemon depending on how tart you like your drink
- 1 small handful fresh mint leaves
- 1 teaspoon sugar or simple syrup (optional)
- ½ cup Mountain Dew ice-cold
- ¼ cup Southern Comfort
- Cut the lemon into wedges.
- Place the lemon wedges in a large glass (a mason jar is great!), throw in the mint and, optionally, add sugar or simple syrup. Muddle them together.
- If your Mountain Dew is not ice-cold or if you want a diluted drink, drop a couple of ice cubes into the glass.
- Pour in the Mountain Dew followed by the Southern Comfort. Or, reverse the order. It doesn’t matter which one goes in first, really.
- Mix everything together.
